This is being cross-posted to many lists, so please excuse the
duplication. It is intended for OCLC full members only:
In March I attended a "What's New with AACR2" session offered by our
regional OCLC network. One of the
'interim guidelines' suggested was to:
"add a serial 006 field to records for integrating resources. The data
in the 006 field will be used in a future conversion of integrating
resource records from BLvl code m to code i following implementation of
Phase 2 by OCLC." Phase 2 apparently is slated for July 2003, at the
earliest. I was also told that all full OCLC membership levels can lock
and replace to add an 006.
This suggestion made me think how wonderful it would be if we all, law
catalogers that are full OCLC members, logged onto OCLC and added an 006
to all of the loose-leaf records that we have in our local catalogs.
Doing so would enable these loose-leaf records to be converted to BLvl
i, i.e. "integrating resource." Potentially, we could lesson the impact
of split catalogs, assuming that after OCLC's conversion we updated our
local catalog records with the "integrating resource" record.
What do you think? Would you be willing to participate? For us, I plan
on extracting all of the OCLC record numbers for our loose-leaf
collections via reporting software. This way I will have a file of those
record numbers to later import the integrating resource record.
Do you have any other suggestions about easily identifying these
records or adding the 006 to them. Would a macro be appropriate to ease
this new workflow? Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Andrea
