Subject: [lawvoyage] Cataloguing multi-volume books

Dear All,
Firstly, a big hello to all the Law-SIGers I met at EndUser a few weeks ago! I had a great time in Chicago - and even learnt a few new things at EndUser too ...
We are facing a problem with our multi-volume books (e.g. titles that have 2 volumes and 1 supplement). Our current cataloguing policy is to catalogue all parts of a multi-volume book on 1 bib record - however we have encountered problems with holds (reservations).
If a student places a hold for a multi-volume title, the hold is placed for all copies in a location. The problem occurs if the supplement is returned first, but the student wanted to borrow volume 1. The return of the supplement satisfys the hold, but the student ends up with the 'wrong' volume.
We think we are looking at one of two solutions: 1) recatalogue the multi-volume books so that each part has an individual bib record or 2) create new item types that are loanable but not requestable. Obviously, we'd like to avoid a big retrospective recatalogue if possible!
We wanted to know how other law libraries have overcome this scenario - what works best for you?
  Many thanks,
  Jackie.
ps - The chocolates I bought 'on Law-SIG recommendation' at Marshall Fields were delicious!
